Types Of Motorhomes Explained

A motorhome is a vehicle on a truck-type chassis built with the purpose of living in.

There are self-contained living quarters and sleeping areas that cater for all of your needs on the road.

There are different calibres of motorhomes that vary in size and facilities.

A low-profile motorhome is your general motorhome that typically comes in the smallest models. Sizes vary between 5.5 to 8 metres in average length, with an average width ranging between 2.1 and 2.49 metres. If you are navigating narrow country roads, there are slimline models available that use a width lower than 2.25 metres.

An over-cab motorhome contains a double bed area over the driving cab, allowing more space for other living areas in the main compartment. These models are usually over three metres tall.

The A class motorhomes are the top of the range models on the market. The accommodation is purpose built to integrate with the drivers cab. It is recommended to invest in a “top-hung” mirror for when driving an A class motorhome. 

Hire Purchase

A HP loan means to hire the motorhome and pay it off in monthly instalments. Once all of the payments have been made, you will then own the motorhome. A deposit of usually 10% is required unless you pursue a no deposit motorhome finance deal.

Failure to pay the instalments on time will result in the repossession of the vehicle.

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)

A PCP deal is similar to a HP deal in that you hire the motorhome for the duration of the payments made, but once the period ends, you have three choices:

  • You can pay off the remaining lump sum known as a “balloon” payment and claim ownership of the motorhome.
  • You can return the motorhome once the balloon payment is due.
  • You can part exchange the motorhome and begin a new PCP deal with a new one.

Because of the balloon payment, it means that the monthly rate is usually lower than with a HP contract. It is also beneficial for customers who are unsure of how their financial circumstances will look at the end of the deal, as they are given a choice of what they want to do.

Personal Contract Hire Finance

A PCH finance deal is the cheapest option if you do not intend to own the motorhome outright. You just pay the hire fee plus lenders interest and return the motorhome at the end of the contract. This could however come with a monthly mileage cap in order to maintain the motorhome’s value.
