If you’re interested in owning a caravan, you’ll also need to know about the financial requirements of this purchase. Please note a fully functioning second hand touring caravan will typically cost around £12,000, and £25,000 brand new.
Sometimes there will be further costs for interior renovation, furnishing and additional appliances. Making your vehicle suitable for towing a caravan, and the installment of anti-theft devices such as wheel clamps will also add to the cost. Therefore in general, you can expect to pay an extra £2,900 on top of the initial price.

It is more costly to own a static caravan due to the luxurious advancements within a static when compared to a touring caravan.

The advancements include electricals, gas and homewares. A usual fit out for a static caravan will cost around £1,200. As a static caravan can be left alone for long periods at a time, additional security is available at around £350.

There are three main options for getting a caravan on finance – Hire Purchase (HP) finance, Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) finance and Personal Contract Hire (PCH) finance.
With Hire Purchase finance, you rent the caravan until you have paid it off. And then once it is paid off, you then own the caravan. Payments are made monthly, with additional interest at the pre-agreed percentage. Also, you should be aware that your caravan will be repossessed if the payments aren’t made on time, so it is very important to keep on top of your finances. The initial deposit made will also decide how much you pay monthly after that. The more that you pay in your deposit, the less the monthly fee.
With a Personal Contract Purchase finance option, you will hire the caravan like with a HP contract, but at the end of the period you have the option to pay a remaining lump sum known as a “balloon” payment in order to own the caravan outright, or to return the caravan at the stage that the balloon payment is due. The monthly rate that you pay with a PCP contract is usually cheaper than with a HP contract due to the balloon payment at the end. A PCP contract comes with a mileage limit and a strict servicing agreement in order to maintain the caravan’s value should you wish to return it.
A Personal Contract Hire finance is an arrangement to lease the caravan. If you don’t intend to own the caravan, then this is probably the best option for you. Because like the other two options, you begin the contract with a percentage deposit to the dealer, followed by monthly payments with interest. You will usually get the lowest rate with a PCH finance deal, as you will not own the caravan. You will need to maintain the caravan’s value throughout the time that you have it on lease.
